The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center - CaSToRC (The Cyprus Institute)

Research Infrastructure (RI) Name: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center - CaSToRC (The Cyprus Institute)

Website:https://www.cyi.ac.cy/index.php/castorc/about-the-center/castorc-center-overview.html

Mission: The introduction, development and employment of intense computational methods and data to advance scientific and technological disciplines
Objectives:

    - Backed by CyI's Tier-1 supercomputing facility, CaSToRC aspires to cultivate the use of High Performance Computing (HPC) and Data Science in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean and to serve the needs for computational and data intensive applications.
    - In addition to offering computational resources and training it pursues its own research areas, which currently focus on scientific computing and novel computer architectures, climate and environmental modelling, nuclear and particle physics, fluid dynamics and heat transfer, chemistry and materials science, computational biology, digital cultural heritage and 3D visualization.
Research Services provided:
    - SimLAB: Provision of prototype supercomputing systems for application porting, code enablement and prototyping activities
    - Visualisation Lab: Provision of visualisation services to be able to visualize massive amounts of data in an easily comprehensible manner
Main Equipment used:
Supercomputing Prototypes:
    - 6 Compute nodes with 2 Tesla GPUs each
    - 8 Compute nodes equipped with 2 Fermi (M2010) GPUs each
    - 2 Compute nodes equipped with 2 Kepler (K20m) GPUs each
    - 2 Compute nodes equipped with 2 Xeon Phi (5100) each
    - 4 Compute nodes equipped with 3 Xeon Phi (7120) each
    - QDR Infiniband switch and cabling
    - 8 Compute nodes equipped with 2 Pascal (P100) GPUs each
    - EDR infiniband switch and cabling

Research Category (Other):Computational Science
RI Main Priorities:
    - To create a research program of international caliber in computational and data science, engineering and underlying areas of scientific computing.

    - To build and provide supercomputing capability in Cyprus enabling the understanding via simulation of a broad range of complex processes many of which have economic and societal impact.

    - To be a catalyst for the development of and education in computation-based science and technology in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region.

    - To emerge as a regional hub for computational science and scientific computing.
