Mission: Protection of public health in relation to quality, safety of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food supplements.
Objectives:
Pharmaceuticals:
- Protection of public health in relation to quality, safety and efficiency of pharmaceutical products.
- Help the rational development of Trade and Pharmaceutical Industry and to enhance the competitiveness of their products.
- Upgrade the services provided by the Laboratory, through its participation in the European Network of Official Medicines Laboratories (OMCL Network).
- Provide advice and reliable laboratory data to the Drug Council for support and implementation of policy decisions and administration.
Cosmetics and food supplements:
- Protection of public health in relation to quality and safety.
Research Services provided:
(a) Physicochemical parameters of pharmaceuticals that are usually tested:
Quality: identification, uniformity of weight, assay of the active ingredient, uniformity of content, pH, water determination, optical rotation etc.
Efficiency: disintegration of tablets, capsules and suppositories, dissolution test for solid dosage forms.
Safety: related substances, impurities, degradation products, visible and sub-visible particles in parenteral preparations).
(b) Analysis of cosmetics for preservatives, phthalic esters, ethylenglycol/ diethylenglycol/fluoride (in toothpastes), PPD (in tatoo inks), lidocaine/ benzocaine, NDELA, free formaldehyde, heavy metals, allergens etc.
(c) Food Supplements: Anabolic Steroids, Stimulants, Vitamins, Heavy metals, PDE- 5 analogs, pharmaceutical substances for Weight loss (Sibutramine HCl, Caffeine, Phenolphthalein, 2,4-Dinitrophenol etc), 1,3-DMAA (1,3-Dimethylamylamine) and other Pharmaceutical substances as Levodopa in Food Supplements.
