Mission: Protection of public health through the microbiological examination of foodstuffs.
Objective: Support the Public Health Services (PHS) of the Ministry of Health with the monitoring of mainly ready-to-eat foodstuffs from the market, for pathogenic and hygiene indicator microorganisms. Support the PHS for the microbiological control of high risk foodstuffs imported from third countries. Support in the PHS for the investigation of foodborne outbreaks and consumer complaints. Maintain the quality of analyses through the implementation of an internal and external quality control system.
Research Services provided:

o The laboratory implements an annual monitoring programme of foodstuffs in collaboration with the PHS, both from the production site (industry and mass catering) and from retail outlets (shops, kiosks, school canteens, supermarkets).
o The laboratory examines a variety of foods intended for consumption by the Cyprus National Guard.
o Examination of imports from third countries. Investigation of consumers’ complaints and food poisoning cases.
