Mission: The continuous upgrading and improvement of the Department so that it is a modern and efficient service, that can serve, as much as possible, the interests of the rural population. The information, education, and vocational training of the rural population on the latest technological developments and on issues of harmonization of the Cypriot agriculture with the European acquis is the most important aspect of the Mission of the Department.
Objective: Reliability, efficiency and organization for the practical implementation of various policy measures, always sensitive to the interests of the rural world and with strict adherence to the rules and standards of the acquis communautaire. In addition, the Department’s objective is that any recommendations addressed to either farmers or European institutions are practical and, at the same time, innovative and progressive through an integrated policy which incorporates both medium-term and long-term planning.
Research Services provided: The Department of Agriculture consists of the following Laboratories:
(1) Virgin Olive Oil Organoleptic Assessment Panel
- Services:
o Sensory analysis of virgin olive oil samples

o 10 tasting booths equipped with olive oil sample heating devices

o Laboratory glassware dishwasher
(2) Section of Plant Protection and Apiculture
- Services:
o Testing local plant samples for pests or disease
o Testing imported plant samples for quarantine or restricted organisms
o Advising farmers on plant protection matters
o Advising farmers on apiculture matters
o Coordinating funding towards apiculture

o Analysis of feedingstuffs (determination of undesirable substances e.g mycotoxins, heavy metals, pesticide residues, coccidiostads, control for the nutritional parameters)
o Determination of pesticide residues in conventional and organic agricultural products as well as for any use of non-registered plant protection products
o Analysis of fertilizers (control of the major and secondary nutritional elements, and trace elements, as well as control for undesirable substances)
o Analysis of leaf samples for fertilization purposes and nutritional deficiencies and analysis of forest leaves for the monitoring of the effect of acid rain on forests
o Analysis of soil samples for fertilization purposes as well as for the determination of physicochemical parameters of soil
o Analysis of water for irrigation uses
o Analysis of pesticide formulations including analyses of active substances and physicochemical properties.
o Analysis of added water in frozen poultry

(4) Oenological Laboratory
- Services:
o Analysis for the Official Wine control
o Analysis for exports and registration of Cyprus wines and alcoholic beverages
o Analysis for any other private purpose
o Analysis for research purposes
o Analysis the improvement of the products
