Mission: Official Control, Monitoring and Surveillance Programs according to relevant legislation on the following:
- Food Additives (colours, preservatives, sweeteners, antioxidants etc.)
- Flavoring substances
- Special analysis of foodstuffs on quality /adulteration (e.g. methanol in spirits, caffeine in drinks, milk species identification)
Objective: To protect public health and promote Good Industrial Practices, Food Safety and relevant policies according to the precautionary/prevention principles of the relevant EU Legislation.
Research Services provided:
o Compliance Control, Monitoring and Surveillance Programmes: A National Food Control Programme is designed annually covering the fields mentioned above, taking into account
- Violations of the relevant legislation
- Food consumption
- Toxicity of food additives
- Recent amendments of the relevant Legislation
- Information collected throughout the year from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) of the EU
Main Equipment Used:
o GC /FID, HPLC / PDA, UV /VIS, Isoelectric Focusing Apparatus (IEF), Electrophoresis Image Analysis, and smaller equipment
